You Define Yourself

They will attempt to name you— efficient, difficult, gifted, flawed. They will measure you by outcomes they understand and fears they project. Do not accept every definition offered. You are not the echo of someone’s approval. Nor are you the residue of their disappointment. Praise is brief. Criticism lingers. Neither is a compass. I have learned this through loss, through success that felt hollow, through love that felt certain until it wasn’t. Through betrayal that tried to rewrite my value. But identity is not assigned. It is chosen, maintained, defended quietly. You define yourself by what you tolerate, by what you refuse, by what you continue to honour when no one is watching. Not by the mistake. Not by the title. Not by the wound. You define yourself each time you rise without applause, each time you speak truth without guarantee, each time you remain kind without obligation. Life will attempt revision. Let it refine you, not replace you. In the end, the only definition that endures is the one you lived consistently, deliberately, without surrendering your core.
