When I Was at my lowest
He came when I was at my lowest, held me close like I was gold, Said I was the only one he’d ever need, the only heart he'd ever hold. “If not you, then no one else,” he said, and I believed those sacred lies, But love can sound like heaven while it’s building your demise. After a month, the glow was fading, His touch grew cold, his tone unsure, He spoke in half-remembered stories, His “forevers” felt impure. He was acting different, quieter, His eyes no longer stayed with me, And then he tripped upon his own words —the truth fell out too easily. He said he lost his feelings, but tell me how that could be true, When he was the one who came chasing, swearing he’d never make me blue. I saw him giving gifts to another, a girl he said was “just a friend,” But how can “random” look like love that you promised had no end? Now I hum the song of heartbreak, The one he taught me how to play, His lies the chords, my tears the rhythm, His ghost still dances when I pray. He came when I was at my lowest — and left me even lower still, But I’ll rise, I’ll heal, I’ll sing again, For love may break, but so can will.
