We Among Vultures
I remember the way the room of the. apartment smelled. Acetone and cheap liquor we finished. with a thirst for more and more each sip I remember the music and how it melted into all the other sounds All the ruckus and rumbling The vibrations of the speakers bound to break beneath the sheer force of youth The way we would bellow at the sky in some sort of desperation In that moment, we spoke the same language as coyotes We were animals hungry and feverish I remember the way the joints were rolled in delicate, thin hands I remember the cocaine dusted on the top like snow-capped mountains Our heads would spin like records, and we beat our chests in triumph as if we had claimed everest I remember, I thought This is to be among vultures Scavengers who seek that which is already dead Sunbleached on the asphalt, rotted To be devoured with no concern, licking up poisoned pools of water This is to be human.
