The temptation didn’t whisper. It stood close. Breathing on my neck. I didn’t resist. I spoke. “So you have ranks,” I said. “Principalities. Powers. Structures. Just like Paul wrote.” It smiled without lips. “Why do you break some men,” I asked, “and pass others like they don’t exist?” It answered, “A fly never lands on boiling food. Some of my juniors can’t touch certain men. But a dog?” “A dog eats even what burns quickly.” I said, “How do you know what is hot?” “The ones who pray. The ones who study the Word.” Silence. “And when the dog eats what burns,” I asked, “what kills the dog?” Its voice hardened. “Shut up. Obey.” I didn’t. “Finish.” A pause. Long. Heavy. Then it said, almost tired: “The light they carry drives us away from a distance. We don’t fight it. We don’t test it. We leave.” The room felt colder. Not because it was near but because I understood.
