Trouble Country
In realms where shadows stretch and linger long, Where echoes of the past with sorrowed tongue, I sing of a country, once bright and strong, Now weighed beneath the burden of its wrongs. Once, vibrant hues adorned the fields so wide, Each sunrise kissed the valleys, hopes untried, Yet dreams, like fragile petals, drifted low, On winds of cruelty and relentless woe. Oh land of promise, where the rivers weep, Each corner hides a secret, buried deep, The laughter of the children, once a song, Now muffled by the fear where they belong. The mountains, stoic sentinels, observe, As hearts grow distant, lost within the curve Of time that’s worn the edges of your soul, And left the fragmentary dreams half-whole. What chains of silence bind your verdent grace? What clouds obscure the beauty of your face? From valleys green to cities gray and bare, A cry for justice hangs upon the air. Here hope, like fragile glass, may break or bend, While empathy, a flicker, seeks to mend. Yet still amid the strife, I see a spark, In fields of resilience where dreams embark.
