The Things He Confessed Part 1
He sat in the cruiser, blue lights painting sins across his face his voice spilling what I spent a lifetime trying to forget. Each word a charge, each charge a bruise that never faded. Sexual abuse of a child. That was my bedtime story. Rape in the first degree. That was the lullaby that silenced my laughter. Incest. That word carved itself into my bones, a ghost that still shivers when I hold my daughter close. He confessed it all every moment I couldn’t remember, every piece of my childhood he stole. A seven-hour standoff with the truth, a handful of pills, and a lifetime of damage. And though I never had to face him in court, his voice still stands trial in my head, replaying those confessions like broken hymns. Now, I mother with trembling hands learning how to trust when trust was the first thing stolen. Learning how to love without fearthat love will turn and wound again. I’m raising her in sunlight, while still learning how to step out of the dark myself. Healing isn’t justice. It’s survival. And every day I wake up and choose to be more than what he confessed.
