Then came the spark she never expected. He was complaining about her in front of the whole class, standing before the teacher. She argued back boldly, confident she was right. But when she met his eyes, something changed. Her strong voice faltered. Words that once came easily suddenly felt trapped. She couldn’t escape his gaze. For the first time, losing a fight to him didn’t seem like a bad idea—even though she knew she was winning the argument. And for the second time, she thought: Maybe he isn’t that bad.
