The Promise I Couldn’t Keep
Once, on a day wrapped in quiet resolve, I made a promise to myself— a vow to walk away, to forget, to release him when the day arrived when he would unveil the love of his life, the one who held his heart, the one who won what I never could. But now, as the day stands before me, a truth I can no longer deny, I find myself frozen, unable to move, unwilling to forget, incapable of letting go. How cruel it is, to realize that even to myself, I am a liar. The promise I carved into my soul now feels like a betrayal, a weight too heavy to bear. I thought I could erase him, like a word written in sand, but he remains— a permanent ink staining my heart, a shadow I cannot outrun. I watch him now, his smile no longer mine to cherish, his laughter a melody I can no longer claim. And though I swore I’d let him go, I find myself clinging to the fragments, to the what-ifs and the almost-weres, to a love that was never mine to hold. Even now, as the world moves on, I am still here, breaking the promise I made to myself, unable to release the one I never truly had.
