The Price of Ascent
You look around at your friends, Then at the towering summit above, You already have it all, no loose ends, Yet you can quench that desire for love, Maybe if you do even more you will stand out? Perhaps like a rose in a drought? You drag along your friends to begin the ascent, To them youre worth more than any money ever spent, While you ascend that desire rises, To the point there are no compromises. Eventually you decide to turn on those you trust most, The feeling of ascending higher making you boast, One by one your friends leave as you get higher, Not wanting to be pawns for your desire, By the time you reach the summit you are filled with glee, You can't help but finally feel free, Yet when you turn to let out a cheer, No-one is there and the area is clear, Finally you realise that you didn't need more... You had it all...a fact you decided to ignore. Now all alone at the top of the summit Your only friend is a bullet.
