The Ohio
When I was young, I used to go to a special place on the Ohio; a confluence in the river wide and deep where two tributaries flow and sweep into the current of the Ohio strong. Sometimes I'd slowly float along upon my back and gaze at the sky as the river rolled indolently by. And as I lolled and lounged so lazily by the heat-soaked fields so hazily, in my head I'd travel across the world; envisioning my life as it might unfurl. But I never got close to how it would be, From pictures of what I thought I'd see; A boy who hadn't been anywhere at all, Dreaming my dreams so inadequately small. But now, as I reflect on the me of today, I could not imagine how life gets in the way and of all those things that I wanted to do, I really ended up doing only a few. Yet, I've been to places I never dreamed of and actually ended up finding true love. That boy in the river way back then, had too many dreams that might have been. But give him a break; he was only ten!
