The Hunger of Love
I lay beneath this ceiling still, Surrounded by things I’ve bought at will, Yet none can fill the hollow space, Where love’s absence leaves no trace. A hunger, fierce, consumes my soul, It gnaws and pulls, it takes its toll. No object, no wealth, no fleeting thrill, Can quench this fire, this aching chill. I seek a love, a woman fair, Who might soothe this heart, a soul laid bare. But life, with its cruel hands, holds tight, And binds us in prisons, out of sight. Every breath is a quiet death, A pulse of agony in each breath. In the light, in the dark, we’re bound, By chains of fate, we are unwound. And yet, in dreams, I feel her near, Her love a balm, a hope sincere. But waking pulls me back to pain, A love too distant to sustain. Love’s guiding light, a distant flame, Flickers in silence, calls my name. And in this void, I can but yearn, For a love that I cannot return.
