The Haunting of "If only"
If only I could turn back the time, I'd mend my fractured soul. I'd fix this broken thing I am, this shattered, empty whole. And if I had just looked through your eyes, felt your silent, weary dread, You wouldn't carry this pain inside, the ache from words unsaid. If only I had heard the fragile truth your heart could not release, You wouldn't be burdened by the lie that you had no peace. If only my rage hadn't burned so bright, a blinding, furious flame, I wouldn't have watched our world crumble, whispered and lost your name. If only I had listened with a soul as quiet as the dawn, And spoken with a gentle voice, before our hope was gone, We wouldn't be lost in this lonely dark, chasing the ghost of "us," And if I had told you the truth from the start, you wouldn't be rebuilding trust. If only I hadn't been so weak, I would've fought the tide, I would have clung to us with all I had, with nowhere left to hide. I would, if only I could turn back time, and find a way to make it right, I'd fix us, even if it took a lifetime of darkness to find the light.
