⟡ The Cost ⟡
They never tell you what freedom takes. They sell you flags and fireworks, loud songs with easy choruses, the kind that rhyme with “brave.” But they don’t tell you about the quiet. They don’t tell you that freedom can feel like standing alone in a room no one else wants to enter. That choosing your own path means walking it with no map, no applause, and sometimes, no one waiting at the end. They don’t tell you how many people you lose when you stop agreeing just to keep the peace. How many nights you’ll spend wondering if silence would have been easier than truth. They don’t tell you that the price of your voice might be someone else’s comfort. That loving yourself in a world that profits from your doubt is a kind of rebellion that leaves bruises you won’t always be proud of. But still— you get up. You say the thing. You leave the place. You become what they said you couldn’t without asking for permission. And somewhere, in the wreckage of obedience, in the ashes of the roles you outgrew, you find it— not a parade, not a crown, but something quieter. Like breath returning. Like your own name, spoken without shame. Like finally being able to choose what hurts, and what heals. That’s freedom
