The Ashes
I drifted through the thorns beneath my feet as though they were rose petals and I was a princess in a faraway land. I wandered around them feeling the stabs prick against the harsh sole of my feet yet all I can do is accept my despair The thorns crush my heel and I feel it. The hot steel of red and silver leaking into the depths. One more step and that's all it takes. One more breath for me to break while I taste tears threatening to undo me, but...I was already lost years ago, so lost the person staring at the other end of the pool isn't me A sob escapes me and the memory seeps through the cracks The whips The thorns The venom I never healed from The nights that became my best friend The cinders I stifle the pain Shut the doors Run away and force the tears away This life was given to me and in a blink of one tragedy --- my existence --- it was taken from me. Now I'm here Here in nowhere, floating through the cracks and singing through the depths. A fantasy where I am and always be a princess with scarlet braided into her breath. A twisted hope that keeps me going One I wouldn't dare to lose
