Stepping Stone
I'm a stepping stone girl In a stepping stone state Held in place by an invisible thing I belong nowhere Belong with no one Forever a second choice In the back of a mind An afterthought Here to be used until home is found Home - a stranger to me really For I belong nowhere And with no one I love, God, do I love Into hearts that aren't there I pour and pour and pour Into nonexistent hands I smile I soak up every moment Because soon, they'll be gone To their love, to their home OF COURSE I'M ANGRY I'm a stepping stone girl In this God forsaken Stepping stone state Wondering when will my time come? When will I be the destination? When will I be the front of a mind? When will MY path be laid out for me? But still I smile For it's taken me years to realize Maybe that IS my path Help others move on to their happiness Their love Their home And though I am not the final; I'm not the destination I'm grateful for the moments Moments had while you were on my stone Maybe one day my path will take me Somewhere And though I'm in the rear view An afterthought Not first Not home Not love I smile Because I'm a stepping stone girl In this stepping stone state Grateful to have known you at all
