My father used to smile and tell the story How we were so poor When I was a child My shoes had no soles And he would polish the top parts left to a sable gleam With smoke of a shaded pot I too young to know what poor is, or care that my feet were in dirt would strut the yard like the rooster bold and proud in my beautiful shiny shoes, barefoot as I could be.
