Poem 1
I dreamed a dream: Of light by the sun sired— Shining merciful, in demure streams: Through waves climbing ever higher; Which, like fresh blown glass; now cooled— Stretched to the end of my sight. At once molten gold and metal fired, And slabs of thick black ice by night. I flew from the rising tide; And it chased me to a towering cliff; Kissed by the sky, with its head in the clouds— Thus was the earth to be defied. Behold! Those watery walls crashing Seething, making all they could reach, their own; While in the deluge, stood my cliff— A veritable Ark! A selfish one, made mine alone. Like Calypso receives those lost at sea— I waited too, ( i know not for who ) Consoled only by lashing winds ; (Tis a dream but that pain rang true) When all at once the waters vanished , Pulled back to their corners of the world; By machinations of which dreams only know; And my ark, a sanctuary— Now painted itself a prison. For my cliff was but an island— An island in the sea of racing clouds, And when I dared gaze upon my home, It was through the haze of a misty shroud. And I stayed upon that cliff:a prisoner of the sky.
