ODE TO ANOTHER YEAR
Another year is carved on life’s tall tree, Another breath of grace has visited me. I lift my thanks to the Giver of days, Whose mercies are countless, whose wisdom sways. A child I was, but that child has flown, Now I walk fields I must till alone. Though the yoke is heavy, my heart still sings, For strength is the gift that each sunrise brings. Now I rise, a man in my own right, No longer leaning on another’s might. I labor for bread, I sow and I reap, The night is my burden, the morning my keep. Yet wisdom whispers, steady and clear, Each day that dawns draws death more near. As candles are lit, so shadows remain, Where joy walks close, so does intense pain. Lo and behold a day shall come When death shall call with silent tone, Whispers in my ear "hey it's your turn" And send me where I walk alone, So I rejoice, yet humbly I pray, To walk with purpose in life’s short stay. For though my steps may vanish like haze, *O Lord, teach me to number my days.*
