Never My Girlfriend
I gave you love in quiet ways, In thoughtful calls and patient days. You asked of me my every move, I thought it meant you had something to prove. But slowly you began to fade, Less of you, more tears I made. If I stayed silent, so did you, Yet I still believed your love was true. Distance came — I waited still, For just one call, one ounce of will. But silence spoke what you never said, Love was alive only in my head. Then there she was upon your page, A different girl, a different stage. “My girlfriend,” you said so plain, And washed my heart in sudden pain. “You were never mine,” your cold reply — That night I learned how dreams can die. I broke, I cried, I felt the fall… But rose the next day, standing tall. For though your words cut deep and hard, They freed a heart that once was scarred. I wasn’t unloved — I just couldn’t see, The one I should’ve chosen… was me.
