Naming a City

Poseidon declared, "From the ground, I give you all a water spring. If you choose me as this city's protector, you will have me at your side in battle and on the sea." But when the people took a drink, the water was far too salty. Undrinkable. What use was water if not to hydrate? So they turned to the goddess. And Athena announced, "From this seed I sow for you, I present an olive tree. Fruit for food and oil, wood for fire and tools. Those in battle will have wisdom and the strategy to win." With such an offer, the choice was obvious. Such a resourceful plant and promise of wit. And so, the city got its name Athens.
