motherhood
I hear the reedy cry while I slumber in my bed I could use more sleep but I raise instead my face is tired and weary, my hair still a mess I hurry to the bed of the one who interrupted my rest. some nights it's a burden for me to raise to leave my warm bed behind bleary-eyed but that little call beckons me like no other I hear because the little cry belongs to the child I hold dear "Mommy, where are you?" the cry asks. "are you here? something in my world isn't right and I woke up in fear. my diaper is wet, my belly is empty, I am alone I miss the days when your belly was my home. Mommy, are you here? are you close?" the cry stops when I reach out to cradle the one I love most and I stare into curious eyes bright as stars. "mommy is here, love," I murmur back, "I'll never be far. just rest your head on my chest, close to my heart. we are together; we never will part. the world is crazy and cold at times but I will keep you warm. you are safe as safe can be wrapped up in my arms. I know something was wrong but I'll set if right. mommy's here my sweetheart. rest sweet tonight."
