Mask of smile
Early in the morning, I gaze into the mirror, Hoping things will grow a little clearer. My reflection looks like it’s about to break, Yet somehow, a smile spreads across my face Ready to save the day, they say. A smile they all call pretty, But it’s only a mask that carries all the pity. All my emotions bottled inside, ’Cause I don’t want to seem dramatic Like I make everything about me, Every day about my insecurities, When, in truth, it’s quietly killing me. If you look me in the eye, You might see what lies deep inside Behind the eyes they say shine With love and laughter, Yet secretly search for comfort, Tired of carrying what’s buried within. I don’t owe the world a smile, But I don’t owe it my tears either. So I smile, somehow, it feels easier, Acting strong in a world that feels scarier, Smiling while my world trembles down, Like the walls of Jericho at dawn.
