"lacked" effort

you'd always say that all you wanted was effort. effort in what way? because all I did was give you effort, give you love, and reassurance, but all you did was push it away. It was as simple as a "good morning! how are you?" to simple hi's and hellos to nothing at all. why? was I not pretty enough, or was I just not enough for you to care about? you made me feel like a monster for the effort I "lacked."
