Divergences and doctrinal schisms may persist within the perennial Shia–Sunni conflict, yet the vicissitudes of history expose a poignant irony: when Saddam Hussein was consigned to the gallows during his execution many among those who now lament were then exultant at his demise. Today, however, it is the Sunnis who seem to bear a deeper mantle of grief than the Shias. Morally and spiritually, it is incumbent upon every Muslim to stand resolute in defence of his faith itself.
