Independence
Echoes of Independence A day of liberation, Nigeria stands proud Free from colonial rule, sovereignty claimed An era of INDEPENDENCE, boldly proclaimed But true freedom, questioned aloud The police harass the struggling masses Violence against youth, a tragic blight Extortion, bribery, daily plight Survival's means, under oppressive classes The politician in his quest of power Has no choice but to submit to a godfather For that is the only way his success can be guaranteed Decisions made under the influence, his mentor who rigged him into power There's the rich man who oppresses the poor Uses his money to harass those who get in his way Committing atrocities against the innocent His monies, cleaning up his mess There goes the judge Who is now a puppet of the powerful Forced to decide in favor of principalities Refusal means resignation or death's finality The law indeed has become an ass There's those in power Whose greed knows no end Concerned only with enriching their pockets; slaves to money Unmoved by the suffering of the masses Is this freedom?
