In Lieu of Conversation
"He loves me." "He loves you not. It's been three months, in case you forgot." "How could I forget? You keep telling me so. Can't you go just one day-" "But you won't let it go! He left you in pieces, I get it, be sure, But I'm sick of the crying, Let's just be mature." "Oh yes, 'mature,' let's hide our heart away, Pretend that nothing's hurting, Say that everything's okay. I'm tired of concealing, just to cry at home in bed." "That's right, 'Cause you would much prefer to cry outside instead. To break down when you hear his name, Or sigh at every song, Or spend all your time wondering, If you were in the wrong." "But what if I am?" "You know you're not, And it's tiring to hear. He's probably forgetting, While you're wishing he were here." "Well what do you expect of me? For when I close my eyes, I dream it's only temporary, saying our goodbyes." "But he never said goodbye to you." "We don't know what he meant." "And nor can we just sit around, Guessing his intent." "What we had was special. He said so all the time.." "And now we know that special things, Sometimes, get left behind."
