Forgone
Up at the thundering sky I said a prayer That the wings of my lover take him higher Oh, that my wings weren't charred away Then I'd be the iron cloud that'd never let him sway I saw him chase, away from me, For something only him could see I paused till, frozen in the cold dead night Hoped he'd catch on; he took to flight Our paths are one, wings alike, eyes ablaze, almost the same But do I dare say, or rather not, for fear we're caught in cupids flames I'll build a hill on which his candles shine I'll make a place where he's called mine.
