Excerpt from Wolves...
Carlo considered her, the fog clearing in his brain. He noted her gaze, the way her eyes stalked about his soul and he wondered how many men she'd broken with her stare. How many times had she licked a man's pride from her teeth like blood. Maya moved around the kitchen, the patient bones of a predator playing at the civility of expresso. Her mouth slightly ajar, hungry for a kill. She slinked towards him, a tiger in hunt. The coffee cup curled steam into the stillness between them. Carlo looked down at the creamy cup of black and it was like death in her fingers. Maya handed it to him. Carlo lifted the cup to his lips, seeing his eyes in hers. And drank. Fearlessly. Got anything stronger? He handed her the empty cup. Plenty of bullets upstairs. Feel like taking shots? Carlo smirked. Ferocious and clever, he thought. Lithe, confident, and smart. Maybe too smart for both their good. In his mind, each adjective laid itself as a well-placed brick in a wall of suspicion around her. She, Carlo thought, had to have done this.
