Evening Contemplation
The house grows still as daylight dies And shadows lengthen 'neath the skies. No footfalls echo down the hall, No laughter answers to my call. I sit before the gentle fire To watch the dancing flames mount higher. Their warmth can keep the ache at bay But can’t dispel the gloom of day. Thoughts turn inward, the world asleep Mem’ries surface from the deep. Faces clear against the gloam, Voices call me from my home. But steady ticks are all that talk, From watching walls with many clocks, For more than reverie do I long, But Silence is the artist’s song I know that with the rising sun, New tasks require to be done. But in the silence of this night I feel content ‘til dawn brings light. And so I watch the embers die, With calm, my solace can supply. Lonely may these evenings be, At least a profit comes to me.
