Echo's lament
I do not fear death, nor the dark, nor the loneliness that lingers in its shadows. I do not fear the silence that fills the spaces between words. What I fear is you— your love. I crave it, I need it, for it is my reason to keep breathing. I fear the fading of memories: the nights we stayed awake, talking until dawn, the days our words lit up screens, and that perfect night when we first met. I fear you will find beauty elsewhere— something greater than my voice, or my endless ramblings about my day, or my insatiable need for the warmth of your arms. I fear you will tire of my gaze, the way it lingers on you with awe, and that you will discover something more fascinating than the fragile, delicate bond we share. I fear our love, not because of its depth, but because I know the truth: somewhere in this world, there is another who is your perfect half, and I was never meant to wear your ring. If my voice becomes nothing but an echo in your life, then let it carry this— the memory of my love, woven into every word, aching to never be forgotten.
