DISTANCE SWALLOWS PROMISES
In fields where once our promises took flight, We whispered vows beneath the moon's soft glow, But distance crept between us in the night, And left a chill where warm affections grow. So yeah, the miles that stretch from heart to heart, Can break the bonds we swore would never part, And time, that thief of memory's sweet art, Leaves only echoes of what once did start. When finally we meet after so long, I see the changes time has gently wrought, The awkward pauses where our smiles belong, And all the tender moments we forgot. You speak of busy days and pressing needs, Of obligations that you must attend, While I recall the tender, loving seeds, We planted with no thought they'd ever end. Your eyes avoid the questions in my own, As excuses flow like rivers to the sea, The promises we made when we were known, Now drift like autumn leaves from memory's tree. I watch the sunset paint the evening sky, And wonder where our shared tomorrows went, The distance grew, and I can't help but sigh, At all the love and time we might have spent. Yet in my heart, a flicker still remains, Of moonlight walks and laughter in the rain, Though distance broke our vows and caused these pains, I'll cherish what we had.
