it's supposed to be easy as one foot in front of the other one foot in front of the other one foot in front of the —a line, thousands of people long. is it community or a conquest? how long am I expected to fight? tooth & nail until my teeth are raw and my nails brittle with sick. one foot in front of the other one foot in front I press my soles into concrete. they play Chopin on the PA and all I hear is chapped lips & aching wrists & one foot in front of the hours ! days ! years of it ! I scream but it's no louder than the piano. I thrash but it's no more violent than one foot one foot I cannot wait any longer. another step and I rot. a hand. a finger. a fist. an eternity to stay, or just seconds to rise
