Cinders
Cinders by Jack A.S. Dunce The fire I built and stoked before nightfall To fend away the darkness' cold embrace Began to strangely sputter and stall Into embers of some forlorn fireplace. I raised my open hands towards the heat To get a better feel for what remained, Praying for it to burn even through peat And to persist until the darkness waned. Before my eyes, embers became cinders And everything succumbed to the shadows. Yet still I felt some warmth on my fingers And drew myself near to the afterglow. The warmth it radiated felt familiar -- An ever slightest tug on the heart strings; Remembered yet vaguely unfamiliar; A song heard by the soul that the heart sings. --🏵️-- ©️pgmr 05/23/2025
