Caught in Between
I never imagined we'd end up here, standing on the edge of something I can't quite name. I sit here, my mind racing, heart aching, wondering how to act now that you’ve laid your soul bare to me in a way I never saw coming. I can't shake the image of your face, hopeful and brave, as you told me. And God, I wished I could rewrite my feelings, make my heart bend to yours, look at you and see the same love reflected back. But I don’t. I don't like you that way, even though I wish I did—with every fiber of my being. I can't force my heart to feel what it doesn't, and that kills me. Because I see the hope in your eyes, the way you look at me like I’m the answer to your prayers. Yet all I can offer you is friendship. It feels like a betrayal, like I'm letting you down. And it hurts— More than anything. Because you mean so much to me. It hurts so damn much, because I know I’m hurting you, even if you won’t say it. You deserve someone who loves you back, and I hate that it's not me. I hate that I'm the one hurting you, the one breaking your heart, when all I want is to protect it. I keep thinking about what happens next. How do we move forward from here? We’ve shared so much—our secrets, our fears, our dreams. But now, everything feels different. Your laughter, your smile, the way you look at me—everything is different, colored by what you feel and what I can't reciprocate. I don’t know where to stand, when your feelings are out in the open, and mine are stuck somewhere I can’t reach. I’m scared of every word, every action, worried it might be the one that makes you walk away for good, I fear every time it's the last time you'll look at me without that hurt in your eyes. All I want is to go back to before, when things were simpler, when we were just friends and nothing was this complicated. I lie awake at night wondering if I can ever make this right, if I could just say the words you want to hear to make it all better. But I can't lie to you, not when you've been so honest with me. If only I could take away your pain, make it disappear, make it so that you didn’t have to hurt because of me, or replace it with the love you crave. But I can't. I want us to stay close, to keep being what we've always been to each other. But I know it's not that simple. You're hurting, and I'm helpless to fix it. How do I keep from breaking your heart while protecting my own? I’m terrified of losing you, of letting this change us. I can’t bear the thought of not having you in my life, of losing our late-night talks, our inside jokes, and the way you always know when something's wrong. But I don’t know how to keep you without causing us both more pain. So here I am, stuck, trying to figure out how to be your friend when I know what you want is more. Knowing that no matter what, something has already changed. So against all odds, I hope that you can still see me as your friend, even if I can't be the lover you want.
