Brownies and betrayal
I stayed up late beneath the moonlight's glow Mixing love into batter, hoping it would show For you, my best friend,I gave my all Yet the next day at school, you didn’t even call With a tray in hand, I searched for your face But you weren’t there—it felt so misplaced When I found you at last,I held out my care But you ran from the gift, like I wasn’t there Others saw the brownies, their eyes lit with glee They begged for a taste, but I saved the best piece for thee You returned, and I hurried, heart beating fast Hoping this gesture might mend what had passed But you took a bite, your words sharp as knives “My mum’s are better,”cut deep into my life Not even a thanks, no kindness to lend From the one I had thought was my truest friend “Your brownies don’t compare,”u added with ease As if crushing my heart was meant to please Yet teachers and friends praised what I’d made While your cold indifference left joy to fade I thought I knew you, your likes, your needs But your silence was louder than any misdeed A small word of thanks was all I had sought Yet the warmth I had hoped for,you never brought So here I stand with an empty plate The weight of my efforts now tied to fate For love unreturned, though it leaves us in pain
