Almost Said Too Much

They asked the question like it was light, A careless guess in the middle of night. Laughter wrapped around every word, But my heart moved faster than what they heard. I nodded calm, I played it clean, Agreed with the story they’d already seen. Denied the truth without a sound, While something honest stayed tightly bound. A name was said, then brushed aside, I stood with the crowd, I stayed on their side. What almost surfaced went back to sleep, Some things are safer the less you speak. So I smiled easy, I let it pass, Certain truths aren't meant to last.
