A Typical Valentine
And while the holy bells ring, Hark it is St. Valentine’s Day. Lovers spill from hidden corners with flowers, Sweet scented in varieties and hues For those who hold their hearts most dear. Singles prop themselves in bed, Smiling, wishing upon distant stars That such a day might greet them warmly. They feign strength and wear bright smiles, Knowing no one holds them close. And while we linger in its glow, The unfaithful claim their share. Hearts shatter, love turns sour For gifts rejected as not enough, For promises broken and partners astray. I say hark St. Valentine’s Day. Let lovers celebrate their love. Let singles watch and hope for better. Let the broken cry and choose their path. I sit with my pen, for I am all three.
