A Thousand Butterflies
A thousand of them in my chest Each a secret trapped beneath a cage They flutter a beat like war drums, they never stop and rest No longer gentle, no longer mild, all them burning with rage They were never born from any love or fear But only from the ashes, bones and dust All I've swallowed, kept and sealed There lives a thousand in my chest. Nothing like the nerves that twist and turn But a silent chaos in fragile fright. Everyone of them rise and fall with every single breath Every single feeling like a war between life and death Each beat a scream concealed deep Every hurt dared not to speak Thoughts that rot, hatched from wide open wounds Carving their names where hope is now doomed Wings soft yet heavy, rattling every bone Born from "don't say anything", some words unaddressed The flutters echo when im most alone Each of those moments i suppressed I smile and speak, they stir and cry Everytime i breathe, some words still beg to die A Thousand Butterflies, never to rest The cost I pay of holding them in my chest
